Take Action Tour

Last night I went to see the Take Action Tour at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip. The tour was sponsored by several teen-oriented companies (including Myspace, Hot Topic, Alternative Press Magazine, Guitar Center, and several others) and consisted of 5 bands: August Burns Red, Human Abstract, The Bled, From First To Last, and Every Time I Die. Basically, it was an entire audience of angry teenagers looking to run around and cause as much damage as destruction as possible.

Not the scene that I typically would choose to be around, but one I'm definitely used to. I interned for almost a year at Vagrant Records, one of the pioneers of emo and screamo music. So I'm used to being around a lot of loud music, dark clothing, and guyliner.

BUT, we had free tickets and Foundation Room access, so we watched the entire show from the upstairs balcony with the "industry people". So my contact with the crazy kids was very limited. It turned out to be a pretty fun night...I saw several people that I hadn't seen in a LONG time, which meant lots of catching up and gossiping. My friend and I also ended up hanging out backstage since she knew a member of the headlining band Every Time I Die. We drank all the free Redbull we could find, then headed out.
I ended up getting home at 2am then woke up at 6:30 this morning to go hiking. So needless to say, I'm rather tired.

Another Entry From My Mother's Journal

I was an interesting child. This entry was done when I was 4 years old.

10-31-87
You and Dad were discussing everyone's Halloween costume for this year. You were going as a panda bear...which your mother labored for countless hours...but that's a whole nother story.
Anyway, you asked Dad what he was going to be. When he replied that he didn't know, you began to supply him with endless suggestions. Suddenly your face lit up as you hit upon the answer
"You can go as God".
When Dad replied with a "Hmmm" you began to giggle.
"That would be silly" you said.
"Why?" asked Dad.
Still suppressing a giggle and with a smug all-knowing look on your face, you replied
"Because then you'd be going as a girl".

This is why I love Jimmy Kimmel

The Hollywood Photo Project

There's something you should know about me....

I am a cameraholic. I have been for as long as I can remember. I'm constantly taking pictures. I carry around at least 3 cameras with me at all times. No matter what I'm doing or where I am I feel the need to document the occasion. It's really an addiction.

A while back I decided to put this addiction to good use by beginning a photo essay of sorts about what Hollywood is to me. I have loved this city from the very moment that I set foot on its cracked, dirty, urine stained sidewalks and my affection for it grows stronger with every passing day. So of course I wanted to share the unconventional beauty of this place and the people who reside in it with others. So here's a few photos from my collection that I've gathered thus far. I'll keep posting them as I take them in the future:

One of the weirdest celebrity sightings ever

I just saw Danny Bonaduce riding a unicycle down the street. Being that I work in reality tv, my first reaction was that he must be filming his reality show. So I looked around for any crew that might be following him...which there was none. Then I looked to see if maybe he was wearing some sort of hidden camera device...nope. There was absolutely no one with him and no way that his actions were being recorded. He simply was out for a ride.

I could tell that he was new to the uni-world. His peddling was a bit shaky and he had a look on his face that was a mix of terror and sheer determination. But he was holding his own and was maintaining a decent speed.

I desperately wanted to get a photo of him, but that would mean that I would have to cut across traffic, turn around, find my camera in my giant purse, and navigate around other cars with one hand while taking a photo with another...and that's way too much danger to put myself in to take a photo of someone like Danny Bonaduce (I don't care what he's doing). So instead, look at this photo of him that I found online and use your imagination:

I swear this is 100% true:

Google Image Search: Awkward

Sometimes I like to do Google image searches of random words. I don't know why, I just want to see what sort of photos show up for whatever word I happen to think of. Today I did an image search of the word "Awkward". This is one of the results, I found it rather funny:

Wisdom from my Mother

From the day I was born until the day I turned 18, my mother kept a journal that was intended to one day be mine. In this little leather bound book she wrote of all of our adventures, all of my childhood insights, and all of her struggles as a parent who wanted to be perfect. I was never allowed to read it, until that day when I was finally considered an adult woman. The journal was passed onto me almost 7 years ago, and I still read it periodically (mainly when I find that I'm missing my mom...who to this day is one of my best friends and lives in another state).

I was thumbing through the journal today, and I came across an entry that really touched me. It was written when I was a little over 1 year old:

June 22, 1984

Today Nancy (Nana, to you) and I had a conversation about weaning you from the bottle. Nancy made a comment that it might take a while because you are "very definite about what you want". My comment to that was "Yeah-that's another way of saying Lauren is Bull Headed". That made me start thinking that I really encourage you to be bull headed - I want you to decide what you want and not be side-tracked by people who try to convince you that another way is the best. In my lifetime, and probably yours, it is difficult for a woman to set her own path in life and follow it. There are always those, both male and female, who are threatened by a woman who is strong-willed and pursues her goals. It is so very easy to bow to their pressure, to take the more acceptable path, to be what everyone else expects you to be. But to bow to it is a form of self deceit - a statement that you are not worthy of those pre-set goals. But you are. You can be anything you want to be and don't EVER let anyone tell you differently. So I will always encourage you to be bull headed. It will be a difficult life as your mother as our opinions will often differ. And others will try to tell me you are spoiled. But I will not bow to that pressure - for your sake. In my life, I have bowed to it - I have been the person I was expected to be. But for you, I will not give in. Be who you want and to hell with anyone else.

It's quite an amazing feeling to realize that all that you are is because of how brave your mother was. She stayed true to what she promised me. She never gave in. She let me choose my own path and I am thankful everyday for that. She and my father never stood in the way of me following my dreams, they stood on the sidelines and cheered me on. It's quite an amazing feeling to be an adult and admire your parents not simply because they are your parents, but because they are amazing people.

Pauly Shore

My friend and I just went to the Coffee Bean at Sunset and Fairfax and Pauly Shore was sitting a couple tables away from us. This is why I love living in Hollywood.

Banksy rip-offs make me sick

The designers of the new Rambo movie poster are very obviously ripping off the artistic style of the legendary graffiti artist Banksy. Why is this a bad thing? Well it goes against everything that Banksy stands for! He is one of the founders of the Art Terrorism movement and he believes that it would be wrong for him to gain any sort of profit off of his work...since graffiti in itself is meant to be an art form available to every member of the public for free. So he doesn't sell his paintings. He doesn't do commissions. He hasn't even revealed his true identity (to this day no one is entirely sure who exactly Banksy is). So by copying his style to promote a multi-million dollar movie, the film makers have essentially trampled over everything that Banksy stands for. And that is why I will not be rushing out to see Rambo.
